How to Do a Tire Rotation at Home

Rotating tires

Getting your tires rotated is an important part of your regular maintenance routine. You can do it at home or visit our team at Casey's Frontier Chevrolet Of Livingston for any of your service needs. Regularly rotating your tires helps to extend their life and keeps you safe in Livingston and Cookeville. Read below for our guide on how to do a tire rotation below!

What Does a Tire Rotation Do?

Your tires wear down unevenly due to your driving habits, road conditions, and your drive train. It occurs naturally, but to prevent further uneven wear a tire rotation is performed. The outside may wear down more than the inside, and the front more than the back. If you have FWD, RWD or AWD, it will change the wear down. Here are some ideas of how to do a tire rotation depending on the drivetrain:

  • FWD Tires: Move the front tires to the back of the car in the same left/right positions. Then move the rear tires to the front and switch the right and left tire.
  • RWD Tires: Do the opposite of above. Move the rear tires to the front of the car in the same left/right positions, and the front tires to the rear, switching the left and right tire whilst you’re at it.

How Often Should You Perform a Tire Rotation?

Rotate the tires on your front and rear wheel drive vehicles about every 5,000-7,500 miles. All-wheel drive vehicles need a rotation every 3,000-5,000 miles because all tires are actively engaged, leading to faster wear down. Check out our guide on the frequency, but always check your owner’s manual for the most accurate recommendations.

How to Rotate Tires at Home in Sparta

Get your car jack, lug nut wrench, and a set of car jacks, then you’ll be ready to rotate your tires near Livingston. These are the steps on how to rotate tires at home:

  1. Engage the parking brake.
  2. Loosen the lug nuts on all four wheels while still leaving them attached. This step is preparation to make unscrewing them when the tire is elevated much easier.
  3. Lift one wheel with the car jack and place the jack stand underneath it.
  4. One by one, remove the tires.
  5. Make sure your tires are filled to the adequate tire pressure, then rotate them according to the appropriate pattern for your type of tires and drivetrain. Place the tire back onto the wheel mount and screw the lug nuts on by hand as far as you can.
  6. Lower the car from the jack stands, then using the lug wrench to finish tightening the nuts. Work the lug nuts diagonally from one to another in a star pattern, this ensures even tightening.
